Environmental Management Systems
No-one has to be told the importance of environmental issues these days, and it is not only your organisation's ethical responsibility to the planet that is at stake. With the increase in environmental legislation in countries around the world it is important that you keep ahead of the game so that your business is ready to meet new legislation when it arrives. Without the requisite certification it can become harder to work with some organisations, particularly government departments and larger businesses.
ISO 14001 has been established to certify general requirements for your organisation's environmental management system (EMS), just as ISO 9001 certifies that you follow general requirements for Quality Management systems (QMS). The rationale behind ISO 14001 is that whatever a business's activity it requires an effective EMS to establish "a common reference for communicating about environmental management issues between organizations and their customers, regulators, the public and other stakeholders". (International Organisation for Standardisation, 1992).
The framework within ISO 14001 covers all the requirements of an environmental management systems including:
- environmental management systems auditing and testing;
- evaluation of EMS performance;
- environmental labelling;
- assessment of product or service life-cycle;
- environmental implications of product standards.
It may seem like a lot to take on for some organisations; however if you are serious about growing your business, cutting waste, staying within the law and increasing profits – you really must look into ISO 14001 certification.
